Moving can be one of the most stressful life events we experience. We all hope for an easy transition, but it seems like there is always something unexpected that occurs along the way. However, many of the mistakes people make while preparing to move can be avoided. Make your move as smooth as possible by avoiding these common mistakes. 

1. Not leaving enough time to pack.

Packing is not something you can do at the last minute. If you procrastinate, you'll be incredibly disorganized, and you might also end up breaking or losing some of your possessions. That is why it is best for you to start packing several weeks in advance. It never hurts to sit down and plan out a process detailing which items to pack on which days. 

2. Not researching movers.

A good moving company can make the process a lot less stressful while also helping you save on moving costs. However, the wrong moving company can turn this process into a nightmare. You should make sure that the moving company you use is licensed. You should also take the time to check their references. After all, you don't want to leave your possessions in the wrong hands. 

3. Not getting moving estimates.

Get estimates from several moving companies before hiring one. The size of your home will affect how much you will have to pay, so an in-home estimate can help you budget for moving costs. You can also get a quote online.

4. Forgetting to label your boxes.

It goes without saying that no matter what, you should always label your boxes before moving. If your boxes aren't labeled, then it will be significantly harder for you to unpack. You will have a much easier time unpacking if you know exactly where everything goes. 

5. Keeping unwanted items.

Moving is a great time to get rid of things you don't want or need. Decluttering is even more important if you will be moving into a smaller place. Create an apartment checklist that includes everything you definitely want to keep before packing up your boxes. 

6. Not taking measurements.

This is so simple that it might be easy to forget. Make sure you will be able to fit your furniture through the door and that everything will fit exactly where you want it to go. Taking measurements in advance will save you a headache and potential added costs. 

7. Not saving your receipts.

It's easy to throw out receipts after you've made a purchase. However, you might be able to deduct some moving expenses from your taxes, so be sure to keep all of your receipts and set them aside for later. 

8. Waiting too long to transfer your utilities or forward your mail.

Transferring your utilities and forwarding your mail can be time-consuming processes, which is why you should get them done as early as possible. Go to the post office and fill out the necessary forms to change your mailing address so there are no issues down the road. You also need to contact your utility providers and let them know when you'll be moving. You can set the date for your services to be terminated at your old home and started at your new one.
